IMPROVING TRADITIONAL MAASAI DWELLINGS IN OLOLOSOKWAN VILLAGE, LOLIONDO – NGORONGORO DISTRICT, ARUSHA
In 2012, the UNESCO Tanzania office requested TAWAH to develop a proposal for an improved Maasai traditional house to reduce interior cooking stove smoke. The goal of this project was to find ways to improve the durability of Maasai houses and to create a healthy interior while maintaining their traditional houses constructed using mud and cow-dung.
After conducting field research, TAWAH designed an improved version of the Maasai traditional house that greatly reduced smoke cooking stove and improved lighting using recycled water bottles. With these improvements, two model houses were built in Ololosukwan village with funding from UNESCO’s Tanzania office.
